Clearing the Intersection at Signal Changes

Clearing the Intersection at Signal Changes

From an accident reconstruction perspective, understanding vehicle position and right-of-way within an intersection is often critical when analyzing collision events.  A frequently misunderstood situation occurs when a driver enters an intersection intending to make a left turn but must wait for opposing traffic to clear before completing the maneuver.

In many traffic environments, a driver may remain within the intersection while waiting for a safe gap in oncoming traffic.  If the signal cycles through to red during this waiting period, the driver may still complete the left turn and exit the intersection, when traffic conditions permit.  The vehicle’s presence within the intersection began before the signal changed and remains an important factor in evaluating the sequence of events.

Drivers approaching from side streets or cross streets who receive a green signal should recognize that a vehicle may still be completing its turn and clearing the intersection.  A green indication does not eliminate the need to observe conditions within the intersection before proceeding.  Drivers must ensure the intersection is clear and avoid interfering with vehicles already completing their movements.

Accident reconstruction analyses routinely examine signal timing, vehicle positioning, driver perception-response, and right-of-way considerations to determine how and why collisions occur in these circumstances.
