Cleared for Flight: Navigating Airspace in Drone Operations
Whether documenting a traffic accident scene, capturing conditions at a construction site, or creating detailed records of a historic structure, drone operations require more preparation than simply arriving on location and taking off. Before every flight, operators must verify that the airspace is safe and authorized for the planned operation. This includes checking for controlled airspace around airports, Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) that may be in effect due to emergencies or special events, and any other FAA restrictions that could impact the drone mission. These checks help ensure the safety of people in the air and on the ground while supporting compliance with federal regulations.
One of the primary tools for obtaining authorization in controlled airspace is the FAA’s Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC). LAANC provides near real-time approval for many drone flights in eligible controlled airspace, allowing qualified operators to obtain authorization before beginning their work. However, LAANC authorizations are not available everywhere, and they do not override Temporary Flight Restrictions. Because TFRs can be established with little notice (for example, following a major accident, wildfire, natural disaster, or VIP visit) it is essential to verify current restrictions immediately prior to each operation.
